Tucson is a city in Pima County, Arizona, located 118 miles (188 km) southeast of Phoenix and 60 miles (98 km) north of the U.S.-Mexico border. The city's population was 541,811 in 2006, with a metropolitan area population of 1,023,320 in 2008. It is the largest city in southern Arizona and the second largest in the state. Tucson is home to the University of Arizona.

Tucson is situated on an alluvial plain in the Sonoran desert, surrounded by five minor ranges of mountains. It has hot summers and temperate winters. However, Tucson is almost always cooler and wetter than Phoenix because of its higher elevation.
